Many people believe that dogs will not eat pickles because they are too salty. However, the truth is actually a little more gross than that. Dogs have an exceptionally sensitive sense of smell and can identify a cucumber as being something different from what it really is very quickly. Their noses can detect the fermentation process at which point their instinct kicks in and tells them to stay away from foods like pickles, onions, or garlic! Once you figure out what your dog is allergic or sensitive to, it can be a lot easier to come up with healthier snacks that they will be happy eating. For example, if your dog is allergic to pickles or cucumbers, you can try offering them apples and carrots as a substitute.
