Staying present and conscious in the moment is a must in the pursuit of happiness. A study conducted by the Stanford University’s Center for the Study of Longevity found that just as we do, the longer we remain “in the zone” the happier we appear to be. What is the ‘zone’? It is the point in time when we are experiencing the greatest experience of happiness and fulfillment.

The zone is the boundary between our conscious and unconscious mind. When we are in the zone we are fully aware of our thoughts, feelings, and decisions, but we are not fully aware of our environment. We are not fully aware of the space around us and the things that surround us. All of that stuff is out of our awareness.

It’s a nice phrase, but I’m not sure it’s quite right. I mean, if you’re using the term, then you are operating in a realm of non-awareness. But I think what we’re actually talking about is the space between the Self and the environment in which we operate. I think what’s interesting about it is that “non-self” is the area that we are operating in, but it’s not the space our brain occupies.

While there may be some awareness of self-awareness, I think the “consciousness” we talk about in this context isn’t the same as the “zone” we speak of.
