Most people think of that marketing efforts as being “big media”. The center of all marketing efforts, however, is not the media it is the business. It’s the business that’s already built and the business that’s going to pay the bills for people who are already spending their money.

Youre so busy telling them that they have to do what you say that you dont think much about what you say. When you say you dont want to pay for a monthly premium membership fee, or when you say you dont like the new marketing system, you dont think about those things. Instead you just tell your customers that you dont like the new software, and that you dont like the new marketing plan.
In the last few years we have seen a lot of marketing efforts die in the face of customer resistance. And then some of it has worked. For instance, we made it clear that we were going to give our customers a refund if they got a refund notice for a game they already owned. In the end we did get a customer to give us the game, but we were very clear that the game wasnt available for download until after we sent out the refund notice.
The thing about marketing is that there are often forces working against you and them. There are also forces working for you and them. The key is to be aware of both and decide which you want to support.
The other thing that I learned from this was that marketing is not the sole responsibility of the developer. In-house marketing is another important part of our business, especially when we’re working with other companies. In-house marketing is where we go to look at past work to see if we have marketing done that we feel is worth continuing.
